閉 - Closed
In old Japan, shopkeepers would slide the heavy Gate shut at dusk to mark their store as Closed, a custom that gave rise to the curtain-like noren still seen today. The kanji shows the two panels of the gate tightly pressed together, keeping everything within sealed off from the outside world.
