退 - Retreat
In old Japanese war tales, a general would order a Retreat by leading his men back along the road, claiming it was 'pretty good' strategy to save strength for tomorrow. The phrase '退く' (shirizoku) itself echoes this idea of tactical withdrawal, not cowardice.
