Rivers in Japan were often worshiped as sacred paths, so to Run Alongside them meant safety and guidance. Picture water flowing steadily past a shrine gate where the Eight spokes of a wheel mark direction, and a great Mouth, Entrance (like a torii) opens the way beside it.
