At a summer shrine, a priest shows the crowd a Skewer with soapberries called 無患子 (“mukuroji,” literally “no-affliction fruit”).
He jokes that even if your Heart feels heavy with worry, these glossy seeds were once carried to wash away suffering.
The bell booms kan…, and everyone laughs, remembering that Afflicted means not just sickness but the worries pierced straight through the Heart like a Skewer.
