Picture a shallow wooden pen - box - shaded by an indigo market awning; inside two identical bolts/critters tap their short legs once with a tiny ip-piki stamp.
In old Edo markets bolts of cloth (疋, a merchant’s unit) and small animals were counted this way - a box holding two matching feet = “equal.”
